Margistar: Scientifically based background data for the revitalization of marginalized mountain areas in the Czech Republic
Project duration: 1 September 2023 — 30 August 2026
The main objective of the project is, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, to design and validate a methodology for determining natural and anthropogenic conditions and for proposing measures to maintain or promote the sustainable use of natural resources, and consequently the ecological stability of the entire area as part of an adaptation strategy to climate change.
- Identification of natural and anthropogenic factors that reduce ecological stability and cause loss of ecosystem functions significantly contributes to planning sustainable use of natural resources in the landscape (forests, flower-rich meadows, and water sources) in marginalized areas.
- The identification and assessment of these factors is performed at a detailed scale of 1:10,000 (at the level of individual habitats) using an extended ESAI method (more about ESAI here).

Application: Assessment of Environmental Burden and Ecological Stability Status
- The application currently offers detailed spatially localised data on land susceptibility to degradation according to the ESAI method for 3 areas: Novohradské hory, eastern Krušné hory, and Jizerské hory.
- The application allows users to identify the degree of overall landscape susceptibility to degradation at the level of individual habitats, and — based on the values of individual parameters and thematic components — the most susceptible or most degraded landscape components that reduce its functionality.
- The outputs provide stakeholders (primarily mayors and nature conservation officers, but also farmers, foresters, and non-governmental organisations) with spatially localised information on the state of socio-environmental factors related to the ecological stability of the landscape, including the state of natural and anthropogenic
factors causing land degradation.
The project Scientifically based background data for the revitalization of marginalized mountain areas in the Czech Republic is carried out by the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CzechGlobe), in collaboration with the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Department of Forest Ecology, LDF) and Palacký University Olomouc (Department of Geoinformatics, Faculty of Science), and is funded with state support from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports within the INTER-COST programme.
